AFUE Calculator (Furnace Efficiency): Save Money & Understand Your Furnace (Free Tool)
You look at your furnace. It is old. You know it is not efficient. But you want to know: “How much am I spending to heat my home? And what will a new, efficient furnace save me?”
The answer lies in AFUE. AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. It is the standard measure of a gas furnace’s efficiency. A higher AFUE means more of the fuel you buy is turned into heat for your home, and less is wasted up the chimney.
Today, I give you a free AFUE Calculator. This tool helps you estimate your annual heating cost based on your furnace’s AFUE rating. It also shows you how much you could save by upgrading to a higher-efficiency model.
What is AFUE? (Simple Explanation)
AFUE is the percentage of fuel that your furnace converts into heat for your home. The rest is lost through the flue and other inefficiencies .
- An 80% AFUE furnace converts 80% of its fuel into heat. The other 20% goes up the chimney.
- A 90% AFUE furnace converts 90% of its fuel into heat. Only 10% is wasted.
- A 98% AFUE furnace (condensing) converts 98% of its fuel into heat. It is the most efficient type available.
The higher the AFUE, the more efficient the furnace, and the lower your heating bills will be.
Why This AFUE Calculator Matters
Here is why you need to calculate your energy cost based on AFUE.
Reason 1: Understand Your Energy Bills
If your heating bill is high, is it because of the cost of gas or because your furnace is inefficient? The calculator helps you separate the two.
Reason 2: Compare Furnaces Before Buying
When you are shopping for a new furnace, the AFUE rating is the most important number for operating costs. Use the calculator to see how much a high-efficiency model will save you.
Reason 3: See if an Upgrade is Worth It
Upgrading from an 80% to a 95% furnace can save you 15% on your heating bill. The calculator shows you exactly how much.

What Is AFUE?
AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. It tells you what percentage of your fuel turns into heat for your home. The rest goes up the flue pipe as wasted exhaust.
An 80% AFUE furnace converts 80 cents of every heating dollar into warmth. The other 20 cents goes straight out the chimney. A 95% AFUE furnace wastes only 5 cents of every dollar. That difference adds up fast over a cold winter.
AFUE is measured over a full heating season — hence “Annual” fuel utilization. It accounts for all startup losses, cycling losses, and standby losses. It is the most reliable single number to compare furnace efficiency.
How to Calculate Annual Heating Cost from AFUE
Here is the formula. It looks like a lot but this calculator does all the math for you automatically.
For example: upgrading from 80% to 95% AFUE saves you 80/95 = 15.8% of your current fuel bill. On a $1,500 annual heating bill, that is $237 saved every year.
2025 DOE Minimum AFUE Standards
| Fuel Type | US Region | DOE Minimum AFUE | Energy Star Threshold |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural Gas | Northern US (most states) | 90% AFUE | 95% AFUE |
| Natural Gas | Southern US | 80% AFUE | 95% AFUE |
| Propane (LP) | Northern US | 90% AFUE | 95% AFUE |
| Propane (LP) | Southern US | 80% AFUE | 95% AFUE |
| Fuel Oil | All US | 83% AFUE | 85% AFUE |
| Mobile Homes | All US | 75% AFUE | N/A |
Key things to remember about AFUE
- AFUE = Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. It measures what % of your fuel becomes heat. 95% AFUE means 95 cents of every dollar heats your home.
- DOE minimum for new gas furnaces: 90% AFUE in Northern US, 80% AFUE in Southern US (as of 2025).
- Upgrading from 80% to 95% AFUE cuts your fuel bill by about 15.8% per year.
- Federal tax credit: 30% of furnace cost (up to $600) for 95%+ AFUE gas or propane furnaces — file IRS Form 5695.
- Most US utilities offer $300–$1,500 rebates for upgrading to high-efficiency furnaces. Search dsireusa.org for your state.
- Heating degree days (HDD) determine how hard your furnace works. Zone 6 (Minnesota) uses about 8,500 HDD/year vs Zone 1 (Florida) at about 800 HDD/year.
- Fix ductwork leaks before upgrading. A leaky duct system wastes 20–30% of your furnace output regardless of AFUE.
- High-efficiency (90%+) furnaces use PVC flue pipes instead of metal because their exhaust is cooler and more acidic. This is an installation difference to plan for.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. What is the minimum AFUE for a new furnace?
The minimum AFUE for a new gas furnace is 80%. However, many states require higher minimums (85% or 90%) for new installations.
2. Is 80% AFUE good?
80% is the minimum standard for a new furnace. It is not efficient. A 95% furnace is significantly better.
3. How long does a furnace last?
A well-maintained furnace lasts 15-20 years. If your furnace is over 15 years old, consider replacing it with a high-efficiency model.
4. Does AFUE affect furnace size?
No. AFUE is efficiency. Furnace size (BTU) is capacity. You need the correct size for your home.
5. What is a high-efficiency furnace?
A furnace with an AFUE of 90% or higher is considered high-efficiency. These are condensing furnaces with secondary heat exchangers.
